Exercise has always been a huge part of my life – whether boxing, doing yoga, hiking mountains, or as of late – a lot of CrossFit and boot camp. Before I studied Naturopathic Medicine, I remember having to rely on pain medication like Advil or Tylenol to get through some of those aching days where I excitedly pushed my body a bit too hard. This one time (hehe), although it was one of the best times of my life, I did a 5-day strenuous hike through Salkantay Mountain of the Peruvian Andes, in high altitude. The days were long and I remember waking up with joint stiffness and heavy pain, although “that good pain” that informs your level of work from exercise, I still had to rely on pain medication to help keep me going. On a high note, it got me into the best shape of my life.
Instances like these carried throughout my travels, however now on a more settled level in Toronto, I wake up with “that good pain” from boot camp.
Some days it’s actually difficult to move! Not that I would ever trade it. But what I HAVE done, is substitute pharmaceutical pain medication for something MUCH healthier for my body and just as effective (if not even more).
Ever since completing my studies in Naturopathic Medicine, as well as ongoing herbalist training, it’s as if a new promising world of optimal health opened its beautiful eyes. I always knew conventional pain medication to be problematic in terms of side effects due to the fact that it breaks down the mucosal lining of your stomach – leading to all sorts of digestive related issues, inflammation, and potential ulcer formation, among a few other unfavorable things. So yeah, not something you want to get used to taking!
It’s also easily searchable, and surprisingly not too often mentioned!
“Common Advil side effects may include (via Drugs.com):
- upset stomach, mild heartburn, nausea, vomiting
- bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation;
- dizziness, headache, nervousness;
- mild itching or rash; or
- ringing in your ears.”
“Side effects of Tylenol include (via RxList.com):
- stomach pain,
- loss of appetite,
- dark urine,
- clay-colored stools”
That being said, herbal products have been a dream come true, allowing me to alleviate pressure on my body while not creating additional problems in the long run. It’s a WIN-WIN. For a while now I’ve been a huge fan of Genuine Health, I’ve been using their fermented vegan protein in my smoothie almost daily for years now, alongside their vegan greens + O, and I mean – have you tried their delicious protein bars?! They’re a quality brand that I’ve appreciated for a while now, and continue to rave about. The fact that they’ve created a line of clean (no harmful additives!), herb-based pain products, makes me love them even more. For me, they’ve also been just as effective in treating pain as any over the counter medication I’ve tried, and I can rest easy knowing that they’re supporting my body instead of making me hurt in other ways. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.
SO, if you experience any muscle pain, headaches, back pain, joint pain, or inflammation – I DEFINITELY recommend giving these products a try! *These products are also especially helpful for osteoarthritic joint pain.
